As a current or prospective IDST student, you may wonder: what can I do with my degree after graduation? We are slowly building our alumni network to bring in knowledge and learning to impart to our growing community.
In our second interview, we talk to Sofia. She graduated in 2023 and is now working full-time in Commercial Real Estate Marketing. She also works part-time helping several local Vancouver businesses with their branding, social media, and digital marketing.
What made you decide on the IDST program? Are there any advantages to being in the program compared to other traditional majors?
I chose the IDST program because coming into university, there were many courses I wanted to explore that weren’t available within a traditional major. This program allowed me to design a degree that aligned with my specific interests, aspirations, and career goals. Some key advantages of the IDST program include gaining a diverse skillset, receiving a personalized education, and having access to unique career opportunities.
What would you say to undergraduates reading this who are deciding on the IDST program? Do you have any words of wisdom to share to those who are unsure about their path to graduation?
I would advise them not to overthink their decisions and to choose courses that genuinely interest them and that align with their passions. The IDST program offers flexibility that you wouldn’t typically get in a more structured degree.
As for words of wisdom, I say to embrace challenges. There will be many ups and downs along your path to graduation, so don’t be afraid to take on courses that are challenging but that intrigue you, because your effort will be well worth it in the long run.
The IDST program allows students to build a unique program around a central thematic focus not covered by existing programs to pursue their individual academic and professional goals. Has your experience of broad and in-depth knowledge across several fields shaped your approach to work after graduation?
The IDST program provided me with the ability to gain knowledge across several fields, which had greatly influenced my approach to work after graduation. It equipped me with the versatility to apply for roles in different industries and tailor my resume accordingly. My interdisciplinary background also enhanced my ability to collaborate with professionals from diverse fields, helping me approach projects with a more well-rounded and open perspective.
What are your plans for the next few years?
Over the next few years, I plan to continue advancing within the commercial real estate sector, taking on more leadership roles and contributing to more complex projects. I also aim to deepen my expertise in marketing strategies and explore innovative approaches to driving growth and success. Additionally, I plan on becoming more involved in philanthropic initiatives, utilizing my skillset and knowledge to give back and make a positive impact on the world.
