Thematic Study

Arts students can design their own program by selecting 42 credits of upper-level coursework to explore a theme or issue from an interdisciplinary perspective as well as critically examine the intersection of different scholarly traditions.

The thematic program is intended for students who wish to specialize their studies in an area unavailable through an existing major or minor and students are encouraged to choose their courses broadly from various fields and disciplines. Still, course selection must contribute to the coherence of the focus of your study. Please note that IDST leads to a BA degree and your theme should still have a focus on Arts-related topics. Both admission and program revision are ultimately at the discretion of the Chair.

1) Your Primary category – 30 credits from courses about or related to your primary category which will be your chosen theme / topic of interest.

  • the 30 credits should consist of course codes more diverse than that of the General Study.

2) Your Secondary category – 12 credits from any discipline(s) in a second category (unrelated to the Primary Category)
